Marine and coastal ecosystems like coral reefs, mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrass beds are crucial for maintaining the biosphere's balance. This lab's research focuses on three main components: Coral Reef Studies: The CORRECT team conducts research on coral reefs and corals to understand their roles and challenges. Mangrove Studies: Research on mangroves includes evaluating the practice, challenges, costs, and benefits of implementing community-based Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES). The goal is to assess if carbon credit sales can effectively manage Madagascar's Bay of Assassins mangroves, improve local communities' lives, and preserve biodiversity. This research will guide the implementation of community PES projects in Madagascar and globally. Seagrass Ecosystem Studies: Seagrass beds, known for high productivity, support food security for thousands and provide habitat for marine life. They protect coastlines, sequester carbon, and mitigate climate change. However, these ecosystems face natural and human-induced pressures. Sustainable management and conservation measures are crucial for the longevity of the resources they provide. In regions like the Indian Ocean, including Madagascar, there's a lack of scientific data for decision-making in managing and protecting these ecosystems. The project aims to fill this data gap by assessing the geographical distribution, bioecological characteristics, and biodiversity of these ecosystems. The research will guide conservation, restoration, and resource management activities. Research on components 2 and 3 is conducted within the Blue Carbon Ecosystems and Large Marine Ecosystems research units.
